    1. I was an active duty Air Force member about to deploy to Sarejevo when I read this book I picked it up to learn about the history of the region I would be working in for 6 months After I finished, I felt I had gained a thorough understanding of the forces that brought about the destruction of Yugoslavia during 1989 1992 The leaders of Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Kosovo, etc along with numerous other important players on the stage, are detailed for you The relationships are com [...]

    2. This is a compelling take on the conflict can be understood by anyone as Ambassador Zimmermann sets the scene and the cast up very nicely, he does a great job of explaining the different regions that made up Yugoslavia and the leaders who decided to tear it apart The use of nationalism as a tool by those leaders and the manipulation of the citizens led to a catastrophe that could have been averted, the international community holds plenty of blame as well.

    3. Warren Zimmermann s Origins of a Catastrophe is a fist shaking, teeth gnashing narrative on the cold blooded dismemberment of Yugoslavia and the civil war of genocide which ensued The author, as the last American ambassador to Yugoslavia, made many friends and forged numerous alliances throughout his tenure None of them were able to overcome the tensions and internecine rivalries that precipitated the fall of the proud and glorious nation Despite the enormous contributions of Josip Tito to Europ [...]

    4. Good book The author doesn t waffle on the good and bad actors, and he supports his claims very well Interesting to hear the story from a diplomat s viewpoint instead of a historian s Aside the book focuses almost entirely on the diplomacy as expected and so the details don t get too gory.

    5. A great way to get a basic understanding of the Yugoslav conflict, but not really all that much background information I would definitely recommend it to someone already informed on the history of Yugoslavia from its creation after WWI.

    6. If you are interested in the political background of the Bosnian conflict.is is the book that explains who did what and why.

    7. Great inside information from the last Ambassador to Yugoslavia Writing was so so but the information is unbeatable an American perspective.
